Sir Walter Turf

Sir Walter premium lawn turf is a soft leaf buffalo variety born and bred on our farm which has quickly become Australia's fastest growing turf brand.

Sir Walter features superior colour retention and fungus resistance compared to other varieties that are commercially available as well as being less invasive into gardens than Kikuyu and Couch and less mowing than Kikuyu (approx 50% in summer).

Sir Walter grass can be "killed with kindness". Once established, your lawn will grow vigorously except if it is fertilised heavily, watered in the afternoon and mown with blunt blades during hot-humid weather. This can cause a fungus disease called "Grey Leaf Spot". For this reason we do not recommend that you fertilise your lawn heavily between December and March and preferably water in the morning. However should fungus appear it can be treated with "Amgrow Chemspray Mancozeb Fungicide" which can be purchased in 100g containers (covers approximately 50m2) for $10.50 at our online lawn care store.

Sir Walter requires little fertiliser and water once it is established, so concentrate on fertilising during spring and autumn and deep watering infrequently instead of frequent light watering.

Sir Walter will stay green in winter in most areas provided it is fertilised well in autumn and not mown too low prior to winter.

Where Sir Walter is in a shady position it should be kept longer at all times to allow more leaf growth to compensate for the lack of sun light and watered less frequently.

In spring your Sir Walter lawn (as with any lawn) should be mown very low (except in shady areas) and fertilised. This removes the thatch that has built up in your lawn and allows new stolon growth. This practise has the same affect as top dressing, but is easier and allows your existing lawn height to be maintained.

If you have a dog or dogs, you should consider ordering "Dog Rocks". Dog Rocks are a 100% natural Australian product that will save your lawn from those nasty burn patches that your dog's urine can cause. Dog rocks are available for $11.95 at our online lawn care store and will be couriered to your door.

Preparation: Before laying your lawn you should ensure that your soil base is approximately 1in.(2.5cm.) below surrounding mowing strips and drive-ways. You should fertilise your base with a low nitrogen, multi-nutrient fertiliser such as Sir Walter Fertiliser (Available in 10kg bucket covering approximately 400m2 for $40, a 4kg bucket covering approximately 100m2 for $23, or Sir Launcher,  containing Nutrients, Fertiliser and Moisture magnets, 3kg that will cover approximately 100m2 for $33. These products can be ordered at our online lawn care store.), or Dynamic Lifter.

Laying should start with one strip of turf being placed around the perimeter, then proceeding along the longest edge, across the slope in a brick work fashion, filling in any irregular gaps around the edges at the end.

Maintenance: After laying your new lawn, it can be top dressed (especially in the hotter months) or at least rolled on the joints between each strip of turf. This helps to maintain the moisture around the newly laid turf. As Sir Walter is slow growing after being transplanted it requires extra care (especially water) for the first few weeks. Sir Walter should be kept moist, so depending on the weather, up to 10hrs. watering per day may be required if hot and dry. If humid, only water before lunch . A soaker hose is the preferred method of watering as they keep the turf moist with the minimum amount of water and hence, the least amount of flooding in the sub-soil area.

We recommend Sir Walter Fertiliser for your lawn, which comes in 10kg buckets. This will cover approximately 400m2, costing $40 per bucket. You can order this fertiliser at our online lawn care store.
